It's looking increasingly likely that Apple will launch new models of iPad at tonight's Spring Loaded event, including the fifth-generation iPad Pro.
The latest revelation is that, according to MacRumors, the new version of the 12.9in iPad Pro will be thicker than last year's model. This represents a surprising reversal of the usual tech dogma that products must continually get thinner, but the difference is very small: just 0.5mm. It's debatable whether users will be able to notice the extra girth.
The reason for the additional thickness is an upgrade to the internals: the new backlit mini-LED display in the 12.9in model requires more space. If you prioritise thinness, in other words, you should plump for the 11in model instead.
Just bear in mind that the mini-LED display brings plenty of advantages to compensate for the thicker chassis. The technology provides better colour reproduction, deeper blacks, higher contrast and greater dynamic range than the display tech used in current iPad models.
The Spring Loaded event starts at 6pm UK tonight (20 April). Here's how to watch the presentation live.
We expect the event to focus on iPad announcements, but it may also see the unveiling - at long last - of Apple's AirTag object tracker. If we're very lucky, we might even see a new M1X iMac in a range of bright colours, something that's been hinted at by the recent disappearance of multiple current configurations from the Apple Store, and the reduction in availability of others.
