NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Monday arrested a couple who misbehaved with its personnel when they were stopped for not wearing masks in central Delhi’s Daryaganj. While the man was arrested on Sunday, his wife was arrested on Monday, the police said. The couple was denied bail by the a local court and sent to judicial custody.

A purported video of the incident was shared on social media, wherein the couple could be seen misbehaving with the police personnel when they were asked the reason for not wearing masks.According to police, the incident happened on Sunday during the weekend curfew. The couple, travelling in a car, were stopped and asked the reason for not wearing masks. The woman also said they would not pay the fine and started arguing with them, police said. They abused the beat officers on duty and said, “we will not wear the mask, do whatever you want”. They also couldn’t show any movement pass.

Police said they registered a case against Pankaj, a marketing salesman, and his wife Abha, residents of Patel Nagar.“However, despite such aggressive and provocative behaviour, the policemen remained patient and calm by virtue of their training not to be provoked by such scenario or situation. The two persons by violating the curfew order and Covid protocol, and moreover, by misbehaving with policemen on duty in the manner they did, created grounds for a criminal case to be registered against them and getting arrested,” said a police official.

“During interrogation, the man put the blame on his wife and told police that his wife does not wear mask and also does not let him wear one,’’ a senior police officer said. The woman, however, claimed that she does not wear a mask because of breathing problem, said the police official.
