Washington, Apr 20 (UNI) Former US vice president Walter F Mondale passed away on Monday, the family spokesperson said. He was 93.
The spokesperson did not specify the cause of his death. He is survived by two sons. Mondale died at his home in downtown Minneapolis. His wife, Joan, had died in 2014.
Mondale was Minnesota’s attorney general in the early 1960 and later became US Senate to fill the seat left vacant by Hubert Humphrey, who was elected as vice president.
As a senator he was part of the Finance Committee, the Labor and Public Welfare Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.
He served as the 42nd vice president of the country under Jimmy Carter between 1977 and 1981.
In 1984, he lost White House bid to Ronald Reagan. Before losing the presidential election, he made history by picking a woman, US Rep Geraldine A Ferraro of New York, as his running mate. She was the first woman to seek the second highest post in the country on a major party ticket.
Mondale, who was known as a strong supporter of civil rights, also served as US ambassador to Japan and the envoy to Indonesia under Bill Clinton.
He joined the US Army for two years before taking admission in the University of Minnesota’s law school.
