CHENNAI: Designated senior advocate S Prabakaran was elected vice-chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI) on Tuesday.
Prabakaran, who represents the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at BCI, was elected unopposed, as no other member had filed nomination till the deadline of 3pm on Tuesday.
A veteran lawyer who was three-time president of the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA), Prabakaran heads the Tamil Nadu Advocates Association now. He was elected to the BCI for a second consecutive term two years ago.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, returning officer Suresh Chandra Shrimali said: “Since there no other nomination has been filed by any other member, there is no need to proceed further with the election process. S Prabakaran is declared elected unopposed for the post of vice-chairman, Bar Council of India. Since the post fell vacant due to the resignation of S A Deshmukh, the tenure of Prabakaran will be only for the remaining period – one year – as per the BCI rules.”
As per the April 19 election notification, the last date for nomination was till 3pm on April 20. In case of a contest, the election was to be held on May 2 and the result was to be declared the same day.
