City to have 500 feeders for birds this summer

Noida: Given the rising mercury, a social organisation, Challengers Group, has begun feeder points for birds, especially sparrows, which are fast disappearing from the cityscape.
A total of 500 such spots have been identified in the city, where water and grains will be kept for birds.
Bird feeders made from recycled waste have been installed so far at 51 places, including Sector 12/22, Sector 57 Outpost, DM Office Sector 27, Sector 26, 24, 55 and 56 among others. These feeders will be re-filled on alternate days every week by about seven volunteers from the group.
Prince Sharma, president of the group, said, “The erratic weather is a threat to birds and animals. A few years ago, the chirping sparrow was not visible anywhere as the sweltering heat not only affected humans but also homeless animals and birds. Hence, we have decided to provide them with food and water to help them survive the heat. Accordingly, we built a bird feeder made from recycled waste tin boxes and installed them with grains and water at various places in the city. We were so happy to see sparrows and other birds coming to these feeder points that we decided to make more such feeders and place it at various locations.”
Sharma also appealed to the residents of the city to provide food or grains and water to birds in their balconies, gardens and terraces this summer.
The group, which has been active since the past four years, also works for other causes such as education, awareness, healthcare, women empowerment, environment protection and cleanliness programmes.
