India reports 2.73 lakh fresh Covid cases, 1,619 deaths, touches new record high

This is the fifth consecutive day that over 2 lakh fresh cases were reported in India. Now India's caseload stands at 1.5 crore.

Recording it’s new high, India reported 2,73,810 new cases of Covid-19 infections and 1,619 deaths. The overall death tally of the country has reached 1.78 lakh. This is the fifth consecutive day that over 2 lakh fresh cases were reported in India. Now India’s caseload stands at 1.5 crore.

The government on Sunday said it has increased the supply of medical oxygen to 12 worst affected states including the national capital and Maharashtra. The supply of oxygen meant for industries will also be diverted for medical use. The Railways also preparing to run Oxygen Express Trains.

Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka witnessed the highest single day spike in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra recorded 68,631 cases of Covid-19, Delhi lodged 25,462 fresh cases of coronavirus and Karnataka reported a surge of 19,067 cases. Bengaluru too witnessed highest single-day spike with 12,793 cases.

States like Bihar, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Manipur have announced fresh restrictions in the wake of rapidly increasing coronavirus infections. Apart from the night curfew, malls, schools, cinema halls and places of worship have been closed in Bihar till May 15.  

In Delhi, weekend curfew has been extended after a meeting between Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.
