One of Beaumont’s most heavily-recruited football prospects has committed to a college team.

Chandler Rivers, a Beaumont United cornerback with more than 20 Division I offers, gave a verbal pledge to Duke University in a social media post Monday. Rivers had drawn interest from some of the top schools nationwide, including programs in the SEC, Big 12 and Pac 12.

Duke was Rivers’ only ACC offer. He first announced an offer from the Blue Devils in September of 2020.

Coming off an impressive junior year for the Timberwolves last fall, Rivers was a ball hawk in United’s secondary. He recorded five interceptions last season and was a First-Team Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold selection.

The Timberwolves went 4-3 in district play and made the playoffs for the first time in school history last season. Duke went 2-9 overall in 2020 with wins over Syracuse and Charlotte.

Rivers was also a member of United's state championship basketball team and is set to compete in the track and field regional event later this month.
