Delhi’s EV policy, unveiled in August 2020, provides the perfect case in point. It distinguishes itself by focusing on generating mass demand for EVs, with a target of putting 5 lakh EVs on road by 2024 while other state policies focus largely on supply side or promoting EV manufacturing.
Air pollution is one of the leading causes of death in India, and a major challenge to the long-term sustainability of India’s economic engines: its cities. The World Air Quality Report 2020 puts 22 of the world’s 30 most polluted cities in India. A recent Lancet study found that air pollution accounted for 1.7 million deaths in India in 2019 — 18% of all deaths —costing 1.4% of India’s GDP (Rs 260,000 crore).
