India on Saturday reported 2,34,692 new Covid-19 cases and 1,341 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. The total cases in the country now stand at 1,45,26,609. There are now 16,79,740 active cases while 1,26,71,220 people have recovered from the disease. The overall death toll has reached 1,75,649. As many as 11,99,37,641 people have been vaccinated so far.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday the ongoing Kumbh in Haridwar should now have symbolic participation due to the COVID-19 crisis. Modi tweeted that he spoke to Swami Avdheshanand Giri of Juna Akhara over telephone and enquired about the health of saints, many of whom have contracted the infection, and also conveyed his appreciation for their cooperation with the local administration.
With the demand for vaccines increasing, the Centre Friday announced a plan to double by May-June the Covaxin production capacity of Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, including a grant of Rs 65 crore for building a new production facility in Bengaluru. On the request of Gujarat government, the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to depute 25 doctors and 75 paramedics from Central Armed Police Forces at the upcoming DRDO's 900-bed Covid-19 hospital in Ahmedabad.
Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting certain measures to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
"Vaccines may be made available outside the Govt supply chain in the open market so that willing citizens who can afford the vaccine can avail them," he said in his letter.
"We are getting huge response from people to get vaccinated. However, intermittent supply is creating a challenge in meeting the demand...." his letter stated.

The Railways Friday formulated a policy for the transportation of liquid medical oxygen in cryogenic tankers after a plea by the government of Maharashtra, one of the worst affected states by the coronavirus pandemic, reported PTI.
The policy, made public late Friday night, said the cryogenic tankers will be transported as a paid-for roll on-roll of (Ro-Ro) service to various destinations across states.
A circular said Maharashtra's health secretary had requested for the transport of medical oxygen in cryogenic containers."The matter has been examined. Competent authority has approved the transport of liquid medical oxygen in cryogenic containers," it said, detailing the charges to be levied for the service.
