New DelhiWrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya won a gold medal at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships in Almaty on Saturday. Dahiya retains his title in the 57kg weight category after defeating Iranian Alireza Sarlak 9-4 on Saturday.
“Congratulations to #TOPSAthlete Ravi Dahiya who retained his title in 57kg men at the Asian Wrestling Championships after beating Iranian Alireza Sarlak 9-4,” SAI Media tweeted.
Vinesh Phogat won her maiden gold during the Asian Wrestling Championships on Friday after beating Taipei rival Meng Hsuan Hsieh in the final.
The wrestler with the Olympics has previously won three silver and four bronze medals and this is Vinesh’s third gold in three tournaments since her return in March.
Meanwhile, six athletes including two wrestlers and four sailors have been included in the core group Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). This is according to the policy decision taken at the 56th meeting of the Mission Olympic Cell on April 7, where it was decided that all Olympic-qualified athletes would be supported by TOPS.
The female wrestler Anshu Malik of 57 kg and the wrestler of 62 kg, Sonam Malik, were included in the TOPS core group after they achieved their Olympic quotas in Tokyo at the Olympic qualifying Olympic qualifying tournament.
Both the athletes were previously part of the TOPS development group. They are among six wrestlers to win quotas for the Tokyo Olympics.
