TURIN -- Italian unions still have fears about a Stellantis plan for production at the automaker's plants in Italy, even after the company told them it will not reduce capacity amid falling sales.
Stellantis told unions it had no plan to reduce production in the country and in particular at the Melfi plant, but that it was considering other actions as it deals with weak demand, unions said in a joint statement on Thursday.
However, unions said they are still worried. Stellantis "did not dispel all our doubts and fears," they said.
Last month the head of the FIM CISL union, Ferdinando Uliano, said Stellantis was considering whether to close one of two production lines at Melfi. The Jeep Renegade and Compass, and the Fiat 500X SUVs, are built at Melfi, which is considered the most efficient Stellantis plant in Italy.
"The company gave us only partial reassurance on Melfi," Gianluca Ficco of Uilm union said after unions met the company in Turin. "We will stay vigilant."
A new meeting between the company and unions is expected in May.
