Only way to end crisis in Yemen is through lasting and inclusive peace: TS Tirumurti

Expressing concerns about the violence in Yemen at the United Nations, India on Thursday said that the only way to end the crisis in Yemen is through lasting and inclusive peace.

The permanent representative of India to the UN, TS Tirumurti, on Friday, said in a statement that, “We are also deeply concerned about the humanitarian consequences of the ongoing military escalation in Marib. The fighting has put the large population of Marib, including more than a million, internally displaced people at risk. We hope that the ongoing diplomatic efforts will result in the fighting ends soon.”

The diplomat further stated that the instability in Yemen will be abused by terrorist groups to expand their occupancy in the country. He further said that the council must not disregard the threats posed by terrorist groups to peace and stability in the country and the region.

Explaining the exacerbating effects of prolonged conflicts and ebbing economic conditions of Yemeni people, Tirumurti said, “The humanitarian situation in the country is dire. The famine-like conditions in many governorates are expected to worsen the humanitarian crisis in the coming months. The full support of the international community is required to prevent a famine in the country.” Ambassador Tirumurti stated that the only way to end the crisis in Yemen is through lasting and inclusive peace. Commending the work of the recent diplomatic initiatives, the ambassador stated that the efforts have opened “a new window of opportunity”. The ambassador appreciated the efforts by Oman in promoting a dialogue between the key stakeholders towards finding a “comprehensive” solution to the conflict in Yemen.

“India supports all the efforts to find an inclusive and peaceful political solution to the Yemen crisis through the negotiations led and owned by Yemeni people,” the ambassador added.
