Apple cameras and photo quality do NOT improve from gen to gen. They have a system figured out to make it appear that way when you compare them to photos from the old phone.
iPhones use a propriety, closed source file format. This format is designed to degrade subtly with age. It's also designed to render more poorly on phones newer than the generation they were taken with.
There hasn't been an actual change in the camera quality for (at least) five gens. They just created an illusion to make you feel like they have.
