Hyderabad: Well-known bone radiologist and founding director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Kakarla Subbarao, passed away in the early hours of Friday morning at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Secunderabad, due to complicated age. He was 96.
He is remembered for creating NIMS from his predecessor Nizam Orthopedics, by implementing a new structure and switching to a leading medical institution in the country, commissioned by former Prime Minister NT Rama Rao.
Rao, born into a farming family of Venkata Ratnam and Manikyamma in the town of Pedamuttevi in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, in 1925, Rao completed his MBBS at Andhra College and later MS in Radiology at the New York University of Postgraduate Medical School completed. He works as a professor of radiology at Osmania Medical College and the New York College of Pediatric Medicine.
He was a professor of radiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York until he returned to India in 1986 to join Nizam Orthopedics. As an honorary, founding president of NIMS, he worked a total period of more than ten years without any salary.
He was also the chairman of Medwin Hospitals, Hyderabad and SVIMS, Tirupati.
Dr. Rao was also the founding president of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA), an umbrella organization for Telugu-speaking people in the United States.
For his valuable contributions in the field of medicine, the Government of India awarded Kakarla Subbarao in 2000 to Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award.
KCR, Chandrababu Naidu expresses condolences
Telangana Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday expressed condolences over the death of Dr. Kakarla Subbara and recalls the services he rendered in the field of medicine. He said that the contribution of Dr Subbarao to NIMS as director is worth mentioning. The CM conveyed its condolences to members of the grieving family.
Telugu Desam Party supremo and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, said in a statement: “The news of the death of the famous doctor Kakarla Subbarao shocked me. Subbarao came to his home country at the call of NTR to provide medical services. He becomes the director of NIMS and turns it into a top hospital. ”
This is a huge loss for the medical field, he added.
In a message, Subbarao’s family thanked family members and friends for their prayers and best wishes for his health over the past few months.
The message said of Dr Subba Rao: ‘He was a person with great integrity, high moral values and a lifelong learner and teacher. His exemplary enthusiasm has inspired thousands of medical and non-medical professionals, motivating them to excel in their field. ”
