SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Police has launched a programme under which female cops at all the 135 police stations of the state have been provided two-wheelers to respond to the crime against women.

Up to February 28 this year, the state had reported 246 cases of crime against women and this included three cases of murder, 47 cases of rape, one case of dowry death, 60 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 65 cases of molestation, three cases of abetment to suicide, 38 cases of cruelty to women and 10 cases of eve-teasing.

Last year, 1,654 cases of crime against women were registered in the state while in 2019, total 1,640 cases were registered.
Director general of police Sanjay Kundu said that Himachal Pradesh Police has set up Women Help Desks in every Police Station and these help desks are meant for facilitating a safe and welcome experience for women who visit Police Stations and for responding to complaints by women and girls.

Last year, 1,654 cases of crime against women were registered in the state while in 2019, total 1,640 cases were registered.

“It was felt that in order to reduce the response time for complaints made by girls and women, these help desks needed dedicated mobility,” he said, adding that these dedicated two-wheelers, aptly named as ‘Veerangana on Wheels’, will be used by women constables to respond to crime against women and girls.
He said that it is expected that this initiative will aid in responding faster to complaints made by women and girls.
“Now whenever a complaint of crime against women is received at a police station, lady police officials present on duty can immediately rush to the spot as now they have been provided dedicated two-wheelers,” he added.
Kundu said that Women Help Desk is a scheme of the government of India under which the Union ministry of Home Affairs has provided Rs one lakh for each police station.
He said that besides a two-wheeler, every woman's help desk has also been provided a desktop.
