When Microsoft debuted the Timeline feature in Windows 10 four years ago, it was hoping to enhance the productivity of users significantly. It is not hard to guess that the feature did not receive the expected level of reception from users as it is now set to lose one of its crucial aspects i.e. cross-device syncing ability.

As spotted by Thurrott in the latest official Microsoft blog, the team is working on removing Windows 10 Timeline's cross-device syncing functionality. The post is about the changes included in the newest Windows 10 Insider Preview build.

The post mentions:

"If you have your activity history synced across your devices through your Microsoft account (MSA), you will no longer have the option to upload new activity in Timeline. AAD-connected accounts won’t be impacted. To view web history, Edge and other browsers have the option to look back at recent web activities. You can also view recently used files using OneDrive and Office."

It was initially speculated that the Timeline feature is going away altogether. Microsoft has since clarified the situation and confirmed that the feature will continue to live on Windows 10 devices. It will be store all the activities locally but will not share them with other devices signed in with a Microsoft account starting June 2021.

This is how things will work for now but if the team eventually decides to scrap the whole feature itself, it would not honestly be surprising. It is because the feature also supported Android devices in the beginning but that aspect was killed last year.
