Covid-19: India records highest single-day spike, cases reaches over 2 lakh

India in the last 24 hours has recoded over two lakh fresh coronavirus cases, which is the highest number since the pandemic started. India has become the second worst-hit country by the covid-19 after the United States. With 2,00,739 fresh covid infection, the country’s active cases tally stands at 14,71,877.

Maharashtra, Bihar and Chhattisgarh are the worst-hit states by the covid-19 in the country. Chhattisgarh has witnessed a huge spike in coronavirus cases in the last few weeks. With caseloads of 1,09,139, the state has now the second-highest active caseload in the country. The death toll in the state from Covid stands at 5,187.

According to the health ministry, Maharashtra on Wednesday has reported 58,952 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 35,78,160, while 278 new fatalities pushed the toll to 58,804.

Apart from covid cases in Maharashtra, the state government is also facing problems with lack of oxygen as hospitals running out of oxygen.

The Bihar government has been struggling to fight the new surge in cases as the state is running short of hospital beds to treat serious covid patients. Reports said, Covid beds in 20 government and private hospitals are already full. AIIMS, Patna Director PK Singh said they have been increasing beds but it is not enough.

The Education Ministry on Wednesday canceled the 10th CBSE board and scheduled Class 12 exams amid growing concerns over the surge in Covid-19 infections in the country. Ministery said they will announce the 12th CBSE board dates in June after assessing the covid situation in the country. Ministry said they will make an announcement at least two weeks before the start of the exams.

The decision on canceling and postponing the exams was taken on Wednesday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and the Ministry’s top officers. The meeting was also attended by the Cabinet Secretary and Principal Secretary to the PM.
