At 483, Noida sees its sharpest single-day spike in Covid cases

Noida/Lucknow: Gautam Budh Nagar reported 483 new cases on Wednesday, taking the district’s tally to 28,439. It is the highest single-day case count for the district since the pandemic began. However, according to officials, the data includes about 150 sample reports that were to be uploaded for the past couple of days.
“Wednesday’s tally includes some reports that came out in the past couple of days but were not uploaded by some private hospitals. Around 150 such reports had to be uploaded ,” said district magistrate Suhas LY.
Since last year, the sharpest single-day spike for Gautam Budh Nagar was recorded on November 4 when 339 fresh cases were detected.
The latest spike in Noida came on a day the number of active cases crossed the one lakh-mark in the state. According to state health department data, 20,510 new cases have been reported in Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours and the total number of cases is 7.44 lakh.
On Wednesday, the active case tally was 11,835 cases.
In the past one week, Noida has recorded more than 200 new cases on five days. While on April 9, the number was 225, on April 10, 221 cases were recorded. On April 11, 12 and 13, 219, 239 and 229 cases were recorded, respectively.
Meanwhile, 57 people have recovered in the past 24 hours. So far, 97 deaths have been reported.
Currently, there are 2,027 active patients and the positivity rate is little over 7%. In all, 26,315 people have recovered in the district.
Neighbouring Ghaziabad reported 277 new cases on Wednesday, taking the district’s tally to 28,843. In the past 24 hours, 67 people have been discharged from various hospitals and released from home isolation. So far, 27,466 people have recovered and the number of active cases is 1,272. The district has reported 104 deaths so far.
In the past one week, Ghaziabad recorded more than 100 cases on most days. While on April 8, the number was 108, 159 cases were detected on April 10. The next day, 155 cases were recorded.
On April 12, 13 and 14, 187, 199 and 277 cases were detected, respectively.
The positivity rate has doubled in the past two weeks and the rate since March 2020 is 3.5%. “We have scaled up testing and in the first 12 days of April, 65,478 samples were collected for RT-PCR tests. It means about 5,456 tests a day,” said NK Gupta, the chief medical officer, Ghaziabad.
The state’s death toll now stands at 9,376.
According to official data, about 54% of the active cases in the state were recorded from just four districts — Lucknow (31,687 cases), Prayagraj (11,902), Varanasi (10,206) and Kanpur Nagar (6,447). Another chunk of about 24% cases came from a cluster of 18 districts, including Gautam Budh Nagar (2,027) and Ghaziabad (1,272).
Additional chief secretary, health and family welfare, Amit Mohan Prasad, said that of the total active cases, 54,645 people are under treatment at government or private hospitals.
“The increasing number of new cases and hospitalisations have overwhelmed the system. People must be careful,” he said.
