Active cases in
Tamil Nadu touched 58,097 -- crossing the July 31, 2020 peak of 57,968 cases -- as public health officials added 7,987 new cases and discharged 4,176 patients. The state crossed yet another grim
milestone registering 29 deaths on Thursday -- the highest in 2021.
At least 20 out 37 districts in the state reported a three digit increase in cases. Chennai - the worst affected district -- had 2,558 fresh cases and 21,391 active cases.
Neighbouring Chengalpet reported 685 new cases and 5415 active cases. Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram had 473 and 203 fresh cases respectively. Together the Chennai region had 30,640 (52% of state's share) people under treatment.
In the west, Coimbatore topped the zone's new cases charts with 534 cases, while Trichy (241) had the highest number of fresh cases in the central region. In the south, Madurai reported 234 cases.
Thirteen other districts --Tirupur (233), Salem (195), Cuddalore (179), Tirunelveli (171),
Tuticorin (169),
Thanjavur (166), Krishnagiri (162), Erode (144), Vellore (141),
Nagapattinam (134), Thiruvarur (125), Dindigul (120) and Ranipet (101)-- reported cases above 100 new cases. Namakkal and
Kanyakumari reported 96 fresh cases each and Tiruvanamalai reported 90 cases.
Ten districts reported deaths on Thursday. Chennai reported eight, Kancheepuram had four, and Nagappatinam had three. Chengalpet, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirunelveli reported two deaths each while Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Erode, Madurai Tenkasi and Villupuram reported one death each.
