In the Middle Ages, Christians blamed Jews for the outbreak of the plague, believing that they had escaped the worst of its lethal impact. While there is no basis for this claim, it persisted and was even embraced by some Jewish writers.
This talk will explore the history of the myth of the Jews’ immunity to the Black Death against the backdrop of changing political cultures, medical theories, and collective identity.
