The ministry will review the situation on June 1 to decide fresh dates.
However, the ministry has cancelled class 10 exams.
Earlier, sources in the Education Ministry had told The Indian Express that holding the examinations on time seems “difficult”, given the increase in fresh infections. CBSE’s offline examinations are scheduled to begin on May 4.
Opposition leaders such as Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi have been appealing to the Centre to postpone board exams. Parents, child rights bodies, several state governments have also made similar appeals to the centre to reconsider the plan to conduct offline CBSE board exams next month.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday expressed relief over the postponing/cancellation of class 12 and class 10 board exams.
Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, who has been consistently tweeting in favour of the cancellation of board exams due to rising coronavirus cases across the country, was quite elated on Wednesday as the Education Ministry announced its new schedule. As per the new announcement by the Education Ministry, the CBSE exams for class 12 have been postponed and the ministry will review the situation on June 1. Class 10 Board exams have, however, been cancelled.
Sonu Sood shared on Twitter, “So finally it happened. Congratulations to every student.”
On Tuesday, Sood had tweeted, “Don’t let the exam centres become COVID hotspots. Students are precious.”
As for the Class 12 exam, the government will review the situation on June 1 to decide fresh dates and make an announcement at least two weeks before the start of the exam. Read here
“The results of Class Xth Board will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board. Any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allocated to him/her on this basis will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold the exams,” the Ministry said in a press release.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently appealed to the Centre to postpone exams. He said the decision to conduct the CBSE exams from May 4 should be reconsidered in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases across the country.
The Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) Monday decided to promote students of class 6 and 7 to the successive classes without conducting the annual examinations. Amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases across the country, the state board will promote students of class VI and VII based on internal assessments, which will be conducted by the respective schools.

Chhattisgarh Board Of Secondary Education (CGBSE) last week deferred the dates of class 10 examination 2021. The secondary (class 10) exam were scheduled to be held from April 15 to May 1. The decision has been take due to spike in Covid-19 cases.
The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education has postponed the examinations of Classes 10 and 12 in view of a spike in COVID-19 cases, an official said on Wednesday. The exams of the high school, higher secondary and diploma in pre-school education (vocational course) were scheduled to begin from April 30 and May 1.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has sought postponement of the upcoming CBSE board exams for classes 10 and 12 amid the surge in COVID-19 cases across the country. Singh has written to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', pointing to the prevailing situation and stressing that it would only be appropriate that a decision is taken forthwith to postpone class 10 and 12 board examinations.
The state education minister also requested central boards to reconsider their exam dates. “We will also be writing to the CBSE, ICSE, IB and Cambridge boards, requesting them to reconsider their exam dates,” she tweeted.
On Tuesday, a Delhi education department official said that in the current scenario, it is unlikely that the exams will be held. “It has been an extremely difficult for students and the entire teaching-learning has been conducted through new alternate means. In this case, the rigid insistence on conducting the exams in the old way, and that too in the midst of the steepest rise in cases is hard to understand,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad on Monday announced the postponement of SSC and HSC exams due to the spike in Covid-19 cases in the state.
In Delhi, with all schools closed, the Board exam practicals being conducted in the city’s schools have also been suspended, with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia asked schools to reschedule the pending exams to a later date.
On Tuesday, Delhi CM appealed to the Centre to postpone exams. He said around 6 lakh children will write these exams and 1 lakh teachers will be involved. "These exams centres can become hotspots. The health and well being of children is very important. I appeal to CBSE with folded hands that the exams be cancelled. Some other method of evaluation can be thought of — online or internal assessment perhaps. But cancelling these exams is crucial. Many countries have also cancelled exams; some Indian states have done it too. These exams should be cancelled too,” he said.
Nealy 30 lakh students appear for class 10 and class 12 CBSE board exams every year. Students, parents and other stakeholders are raising concern over the safety in view of rise in Covid-19 cases.
