Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee sits on ‘Dharna’ in Kolkata after EC bans her from campaigning
Election Commission also imposes ban on another BJP leader Rahul Sinha over his remarks in Cooch Behar violence.
On Tuesday, April 13, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sits on a dharna in Kolkata in protest against the Election Commission’s 24-hour ban on her.
The Election Commission orders came over Mamata’s remarks against central forces and a statement which had alleged religious overtones.

Election Commission imposed ban of 24 hours on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from election campaigning. The ban will be imposed from 8 PM on 12th April to 8 PM on 13th April, 2021.
Election Commission of India also imposes a ban on BJP leader Rahul Sinha from campaigning in any manner for next 48 hours commencing from 12 pm today till 12 pm on 15th April over his remarks on Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar violence.

BJP leader Amit Shah will hold a town hall meeting in Baranagar today. On Monday he claimed that the BJP is ahead in 92 of the 135 seats that went to polls in the first four phases of the West Bengal assembly elections, and asked people to give a grand farewell to CM Mamata Banerjee by helping BJP win over 200 plus seats in Bengal.
On the other side, Sushil Chandra appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) with effect from 13th April, a day after incumbent CEC Sunil Arora demits office.
Earlier, on April 11, Election Commission banned the entry of all politicians in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal for next 72 hours to prevent all unlawful activities and prevent violence.
Election Commission had also directed Ministry of Home Affairs to deploy 71 more CAPF companies for upcoming four phases of elections in the West Bengal. In the fourth phase of the elections, a total of five persons were killed, including four in alleged firing by Central Reserve Force personnel.
