SC rules that NGT cannot strike down laws

New Delhi, Apr 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the National Green Tribunal does not have the power to examine the validity or strike down law.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde and comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Balasubramanian was hearing Environment Support Group's plea challenging Section 40 of the Biodiversity Act.

The bench said,'Prima facie we are of the view that the NGT cannot strike down a law.'

The Apex Court stayed proceedings before NGT and listed matter for next week.

The petitioner moved the Top Court challenging the Karnataka High Court order which transferred the matter to NGT.
