
At least three fishermen drowned to death and nine others are missing after a fishing boat capsized after colliding with a container vessel off the coast of Mangaluru early on Tuesday.
While the India Coast Guard (ICG) confirmed recuse of two crew members after an operation that began on Tuesday, the search for others continued till late night and is scheduled to continue on Wednesday as well.
“Two crew members found and reported safe. The coast guard ship recovered three bodies. Search operation for other crew members in progress,” ICG said in a statement.

With three bodies getting recovered from the sea, two have been identified. According to Karnataka Coastal Security Police, they have been identified as Alexander Syrang and Manik Das, both from West Bengal.
The statement mentioned that Sunil Das (34) from West Bengal and Velmurukan (37) from Tamil Nadu were rescued succesfully and were shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru-Udupi, according to Chethan R, Superintendent of Police, Karnataka Coastal Security Police, Udupi.
The boat, IFB Rabah, with 14 fishermen on board, had set off from Beypore in Kozhikode district of Kerala Sunday evening. The boat’s owner Jaffer said in Kozhikode that he had received information that three of them died in the mishap.
Seven of the fishermen are from Tamil Nadu and the remaining from West Bengal and Odisha. Two fishermen have been saved from the sea, the Indian Coast Guard said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the India Cost Guard (ICG) Tuesday confirmed that a search and rescue operation was underway after a sea accident was reported near New Mangalore Port in Karnataka. As many as 14 fishermen were missing as per reports.
According to Coast Guard officials, 3 ICG ships and aircraft have been deployed for the operation. “The search for 14 fishermen of IFB Rabah approximately 43 nautical miles off west New Mangalore is on. Two crew members have been found, search for other crew is in progress,” officials confirmed.
It is learnt that a ship from Singapore, MV APL Le Havre, had collided with the boat.
The Coast Guard said three of its vessels and choppers are continuing the search for the missing fishermen.
Meanwhile, Kozhikode Collector Seeram Sambasiva Rao clarified that the services of the Navy would be sought if required and that a call would be taken based on the situation.
