Election Commission bans Bengal BJP’s Rahul Sinha from campaigning for 48 hours for inciting violence

The incident took place Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi when central forces opened fire after a mob attacked a polling booth.

The Election Commission on Tuesday said it has banned the BJP leader Rahul Sinha from campaigning for 48 hours in Bengal over controversial remarks on the Cooch Behar firing incident and for inciting central forces. Sinha had said that more people should have been shot dead in the firing incident.

The incident took place Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi when central forces opened fire after a mob attacked a polling booth. Five people lost their lives in the incident amongst which four were shot dead by the central forces.

Rahul Sinha, the BJP’s candidate in Habra constituency, had reportedly said on Monday that not four, but eight people should have been shot dead by the central forces. The EC’s ban starts from Tuesday noon till 12 pm to April 15 noon.

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress had asked for action against Rahul Sinha for what it called inflammatory remarks on the Cooch Behar firing.

The Trinamool also referred to Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh’s speech on April 11, in Baranagar, when he issued warnings of similar incidents if anyone overstepped their limits. The Trinamool complained to the election body that BJP leaders were instigating violence with warnings of more such incidents.
