Vendors in Trichy's Gandhi Market fined for not following Covid-19 safety norms

TRICHY: The Trichy Corporation on Tuesday collected Rs 10,000 as fine from vendors at the Gandhi Market for not following Covid-19 safety norms.
Corporation officials conducted a surprise inspection in the market based on complaints. “Many did not wear masks. Penalties were collected on the spot, and vendors were told to use sanitisers frequently,” said corporation commissioner S Sivasubramanian.
Officials warned the vendors that the shops would be sealed if multiple Covid-19 cases were reported in the market.
They instructed lower and grocery vendors to draw social distancing circles. Vendors were asked to maintain six-seven feet distance between one and another.
“The vendors were told that a penalty of Rs 5,000 per shop will be levied and collected if social distancing was not ensured,” the commissioner added.
