Modi calls for united global efforts to defeat COVID19 pandemic

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday stressed the need for united global efforts to deal with the coronavirus crisis, saying mankind will not be able to defeat it unless everyone comes out of it.

In an address at the Raisina Dialogue, the Prime Minister said India tried to protect its 1.3 billion nationals from COVID-19, and, at the same time, tried to support the pandemic response efforts of others.

"We understand fully, that mankind will not defeat the pandemic unless all of us, everywhere, regardless of the colour of our passports, come out of it. That is why, this year, despite many constraints, we have supplied vaccines to over 80 countries," he said at the conference, held virtually.

The Prime Minister further said, "We will continue to share our experiences, our expertise and also our resources with humanity in the fight against the pandemic."

Gujarat logs highest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases, deaths

Gujarat registered 6,690 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the highest single-day count so far, taking the tally to 3,60,206, while a record number of 67 patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said.
As many as 67 more persons died due to the infection, also the highest so far in a day, pushing the toll to 4,922, said a release by the department.

With 6,690 new cases, the statewide COVID-19 tally went up to 3,60,206, said the release.

Out of the 67 persons who succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, 25 died in Surat district, followed by 23 in Ahmedabad, 7 in Rajkot, 4 in Vadodara, 2 in Banaskantha and one each Anand, Bharuch, Chhotaudepur, Gandhinagar, Junagadh and Sabarkantha, it said.

Maharashtra sees 60,212 new COVID-19 cases, 281 die

Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 60,212 fresh coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally to 35,19,208 while 281 fatalities pushed the toll to 58,526, the state health department said.

In view of the alarming rise in cases, the state government has announced a 15-day long statewide curfew from 8 pm on A14 pril. Maharashtra is now left with 5,93,042 active cases, the department said in a release.

Mumbai recorded 7,873 new cases and 27 fatalities, taking the tally to 5,35,264 and the toll to 12,093.

Maha Vikas Aghadi government's flagship economy meal scheme, 'Shiv Bhojan Thali' will be free of cost for the next one month, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray said. He also announced financial aid for the economically weaker section and said 3 kg wheat and 2 kg rice will be given to the 7 crore people under the category.

He also said that daily wages workers will be given Rs 1500 for one month and also announced similar financial assistance for five lakh registered hawkers.

Essential services exempted from new SOPs: Uddhav Thackeray

As per the chief minister, detailed SOPs will be uploaded soon. The new restrictions will be in place for 15 days. 

- Only essential services to be exempted from the restrictions 

- Public transport to be available for only those involved in essential services

- Only petrol pumps, financial institutions associated with SEBI and construction work to continue

- hotel/ restaurants to remain closed only take-away

- home deliveries allowed

 

Coronavirus LATEST Updates: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday isolated himself after some officials in his contact tested positive for COVID-19 .

As many as 93 villagers in Maharashtra's Buldhana district have tested coronavirus positive, many of them after attending a village feast, sources said on Tuesday. The local authorities have declared the Pota village having a population of over 700 persons a containment zone.

Relatives of 10 COVID-19 patients who succumbed at two hospitals in adjoining Palghar district alleged that a shortage of oxygen led to the deaths, a charge denied by civic authorities and the management of the medical facilities on Tuesday.

 India's drug regulator has granted permission for restricted emergency use of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V with certain conditions, the Union Health Ministry announced on Tuesday, while stating that Dr Reddy's Laboratorieswill import the vaccine for use in the country. The approval by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) paves the way for a third vaccine to be available in the country.

Ten states — Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Kerala have shown a rise in the COVID-19 daily cases accounting for 80.80 percent of the new infections reported in a day, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 51,751. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh with 13,604 while Chhattisgarh reported 13,576 new cases.

Observing that six lakh children in Delhi are going to appear for the CBSE board exams and nearly one lakh teachers are expected to participate in the exercise, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the exams can become major hotspots and lead to large scale spread of the coronavirus infection. "Children's lives and health is very important to us. I request the Centre to cancel CBSE exams," he said

The active caseload was at its lowest at 1,35,926 on 12 February, 2021 and it was at its highest at 10,17,754 on 18 September, 2020.

The vaccine has been approved for use in countries with a total population of 3 billion people or about 40 per cent of the global population, and India has become the 60th country to approve Sputnik V, RDIF, Russia's sovereign wealth fund, said in a statement.

No question of lockdown right now. Technical advisory committee has said that positive cases will increase here till 2 May hence people must abide by COVID appropriate behaviour, said Yediyurappa.

With 97,168 more COVID-19 patients being cured of the infectious disease, the number of recoveries in the country has risen over 1.22 crore, said the Union health ministry on Tuesday. The COVID-19 recovery rate has dropped to 89.5 percent.

West Bengal on Monday registered 4,511 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike since the pandemic started last year, pushing the state's tally to 6,19,407, the health department said in a bulletin.

Kolkata also set a record of 1,115 new cases. The state reported this year's highest COVID-19 fatalities at 14 on Monday, pushing the toll to 10,414.

The bulletin said that 1,947 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cured people to 5,82,462.

The state currently has 26,531 active cases. Out of the 14 deaths, 11 were due to comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental.

Kolkata accounted for four deaths, while three each were reported from North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts. South 24 Parganas district registered two deaths while Paschim Bardhaman and Paschim Medinipur recorded one fatality each, the bulletin said.

The fresh positive cases included 1,115 from Kolkata and 1,084 from North 24 Parganas district.

In the last 24 hours, 37,116 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the state.

On Monday, at least 2,32,734 people were vaccinated in West Bengal, an official of the state health department said.

At a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay, the state government decided that no big celebration will be allowed on the occasion of Bengali New Year falling on 15 April in view of the surge in coronavirus cases, official sources said.
