13 unregistered canoes, illegally extracted sand seized at Camurlim

In a joint operation by mines and geology department, Captain of Ports and police conducted a surprise raid in River Chapora at Bharvonwaddo in Camurlim and seized 13 unregistered canoes and also a stack of illegally extracted sand.

Acting on reliable information about illegal sand extraction activities a joint raid was conducted by a team of officials from the mines and geology department, Captain of Ports, Camurlim Talathi and Mapusa police wherein 13 unregistered canoes were seized and handed over to the Captain of Ports for further action. The illegally extracted sand is likely to be dumped back in the river Chapora.  

Acting on a complaint from Sudhir Mandrekar, assistant geologist, Directorate of Mines, the Mapusa police registered an offence under Section 379 read with 34 of Indian Penal Code and Section 3, 38 of Goa Daman and Diu minor mineral concession rules 1985 against one Nitin Mashelkar resident of Camurlim and an unknown for committing theft and for illegal extraction of sand without proper permission.  ASI Suryakant Shetye is investigating the case.
