LG makes 'three year pledge' for OS updates, but some models will only get two OS updates

LG has made a public pledge to reassure current and future customers on future OS updates following its announcement to withdraw from the mobile industry, for select 2019 and 2020 premium models.

With OS updates on Android a known bug-bear for Android smartphone owners, save those of the Google Pixel range which get Google's own Android updates effectively immediately upon release, LG has made an announcement it should have made long before shutting down its mobile business.

Naturally, because LG still has stock in stores that it would love to sell, and it still has customers who are using its smartphones, LG has acknowledged concerns around OS updates with its new announcement.

After all, existing and future customers want assurance that it's safe to use LG phones, and that the phones will still get support.

LG's announcement is that "all premium LG smartphones currently in use will receive up to three iterations of Android operating system updates from the year of purchase."

What that actually means for specific models is "the three OS update applies to LG premium phones released in 2019 and later (G series, V series, VELVET2) while certain 2020 models such as LG Stylo and K series will receive two OS updates.

LG says this promise "comes on the heels of the announcement last week that LG will be exiting the mobile business by the end of July."

LG is also continuing to make smartphones, but not for much longer. The Korean electronics giant says it will "continue to manufacture phones through the second quarter to meet contractual obligations to carriers and partners.

"This means customers can still purchase LG mobile phones currently in inventory and service support and security software updates will continue to be provided in accordance with LG’s contractual obligations, Manufacturer’s warranty and the Australian Consumer law."

LG also notes that "future updates will depend on Google’s distribution schedule as well as other factors such as device performance and compatibility", with the added notes that the "G series and V series will be updated to Android 12", while "Velvet will be updated to Android 13."
