The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee on Monday demanded the state government defer the implementation of the amended Central Motor Vehicle Act, 2019.

The GPYCC strongly condemned the “arbitrary decision” of the government to implement the new Motor Vehicle Act, and stated that the current BJP-led government is “insensitive” towards the local people.

“The Youth Congress will oppose any move of the government to enforce the new rules in this pandemic period and will take to the streets along with the common man to oppose the arbitrary decision to rob the common man under the pretext of enforcement of the new law,” reads the memorandum submitted by GPYCC president Varad Mardolkar to transport director Rajendra Satardekar.

Pointing out that BJP ruled state like Gujarat has reduced the fines by 50-70 per cent to reduce the burden on the people, the Youth Congress stated that the Goa government has every right to make necessary amendment in the said Act to relieve its people from the steep fines.

“The Youth Congress strongly demands that before thinking of implementing the new Act, all the roads across the state must be first repaired, hotmixed and also must be in drivable condition in a true sense,” the memorandum states.

The notification issued by the government reads that the Act will be implemented from April 16 however the state government decided to actually start the enforcement from May 1 and utilize the gap of two weeks in creating awareness.
