Kumbh Mela official: Difficult to maintain social distancing at ghats

Kumbh Mela Inspector General (IG) Sanjay Gunjyal on Monday said, it is very difficult to maintain social distancing and other covid norms during the second Shahi Snan, lakh of people have gathered to take a holy dip in River Ganga at Har Ki Pauri in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar,  Gunjyal said.

Gunjyal said his team is working non-stop, urging people to follow coronavirus guideline like wear masks with proper social distancing, but due to the huge crowd, it is not possible to issue challans on every person. A stampede-like situation may arise if we would try to enforce covid norms and social distancing at ghats,  Gunjyal said.

Reports said over 350 hightech CCTV cameras have been installed at many locations in the Kumbh mela area. Many CCTV  cameras are equipped with high tech sensors that generate an alert when it captures the image of a person without a mask.

The cameras are also being used to keep a count of vehicles at parking lots and to spot objects lying unattended for more than 10 minutes.

Lakh of devotees on Monday took a holy dip in Ganga River at Uttarakhand’s Har Ki Pauri on the occasion of the second shahi snan in Kumbh Mela. The first Shahi Snan was held on March 11 on the occasion of Mahashivratri.

According to the Health Ministry on Sunday, Uttarakhand reported 1,333 fresh coronavirus cases, now the total number of the cases in the state stands at 1,08,812.

Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state by the coronavirus n the country with 63,294 new cases and 349 deaths in the last 24 hours. The Maharashtra government is likely to order a complete lockdown in the state this week to control the covid situation.

India is one of the worst-hit country by the covid. India has recorded 1,68,912 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours. The country’s covid caseload stands at 1.35 crore. The resurgence of the virus led to 904 new deaths, taking the total death count to 1,70,179.
