1 dead, Lexington officer seriously hurt after New Circle Road collision, police say

One woman is dead and a Lexington police officer is in serious condition after the two collided in their vehicles early Monday morning, according to Lexington police.

The collision happened at 1:36 a.m. on New Circle Road between Harrodsburg Road and Nicholasville Road, police said. Police were called numerous times about a driver in an SUV going the wrong direction on the inner loop of New Circle Road, which ultimately led to the crash.

“The Lexington Fire Department arrived on scene and extricated both drivers from their vehicles,” police Sgt. Donnell Gordon said in a statement. “At this time it is believed the officer was not involved with the dispatched call.”

The 38-year-old woman driving the SUV and the officer were both taken to a hospital. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 38-year-old woman’s name was expected to be released by the Fayette County coroner’s office.

In a news conference Monday morning, a police spokesman said the officer’s condition was serious. Police have “no idea” why the driver of the SUV was reportedly going the wrong way on New Circle, but hope that will be determined through investigation.

Police didn’t immediately have information on how long the officer has been with the department — we’re expecting to have that information later. She was nearing the end of her shift and hadn’t been dispatched to the call, police said.

Gordon called this “a horrible case” and said police are hopeful that people will call them if they saw the other driver prior to the accident or knew why she may have been driving the wrong direction.

The Lexington Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit was still investigating the crash. As a result, the inner loop of New Circle Road between Harrodsburg Road and Nicholasville Road were shut down “until further notice,” police said Monday.

It’s really heartwarming.”“I said to Deb and Harry just a couple days ago, ‘You guys, Universal should do a re-release of this movie,’” Evans added. “It’s literally so perfect right now.”Here, we spoke with Evans about the joyful clothes of Josie and how the film is more in vogue now than ever.So, it’s been 20 years since Josie the Pussycats came out, that seems crazy!It is crazy. I can’t believe how much time has passed. It feels like yesterday.I read that you tried to incorporate some comedic elements to the costumes. How did you go about doing that?When we’re doing a comedy, there’s this really fine line between everything is funny, so it doesn’t feel like it’s grounded in reality. Or, if you don’t play into the funny enough, it takes you out of it. So, it’s this interesting conundrum of how to dress people in a comedy. I always take the attitude of making it grounded in reality and then put in the comedic bits, as opposed to making all the costumes funny. As the movie goes on, the audience can put themselves in their shoes. Then the ridiculous things they do, or the funny, embarrassing, or outlandish things, you’re right there along with them. Whereas if they’re always just so funny and crazy, you don’t see yourself through their eyes at all.So, when you are talking about adding the comedic bits later on, Josie and the girls dress normal and when they wear cat ears, it suddenly doesn’t seem so crazy.Yeah, it’s like we could all be wearing cat ears! That was one of the challenges about the film, is finding ways for something like cat ears to be a really normal part of any given outfit. That way it seemed normal. That’s really what I was going for. I wanted it to feel like, this is who they are and this what they are.It’s kind of the opposite with Fiona (played by Parker Posey). She’s this outrageous, very fashionable supervillain.Part of [Fiona’s] costumes is that she is striving for perfection at all times, she’s untouchable and unreachable. That was the design concept: to create things that were super fashionable, right off the runway. Things that you don’t see people wearing. Fiona would show up somewhere in these very couture, avant-garde, and outrageous looks for just an average day at work. Parker Posey really pulled that off so well. It added to the fact that the girls then seemed quite normal. Our new normal was the heightened fashion of the girls because Parker’s character Fiona was on a couture level.You also made most of the costumes by hand?It was one of those jobs that the look of it needed to be so specific, because it was coming from a cartoon, so it needed to have a bit of a heightened reality to it. When you’re looking for things like that, you can’t always find what you want. So, we just set up shop and I made the majority of all the costumes.So, are you and Tara Reid to blame for low-rise jeans becoming a thing in the 2000s?I would love to believe that! But it felt like there was already a trend moving in that direction. We just happened to hit the trend on the spot. I would love to be responsible for that, but I can’t totally take credit. I’m always looking at the runway shows, and you can sort of see when certain trends are starting to build. I could see that there was a trend going toward low-rise jeans and I just thought to push it to the absolute degree of the lowest pants humanly possible.With low-rise jeans and halter tops, lots of the trends that we saw in the movie are coming back in style today, thanks to Gen Z and TikTok. What are your thoughts on that?Well, what I love about fashion, in general, is that things are always kind of cyclical in that way. So, I love when you see it come back again, because it does conjure up all these beautiful memories. You’re like, ‘I remember when I wore that or when I saw that in Josie.’ I think there’s a sense of whimsy that people are playing with fashion now. They’re looking back to these other time periods and really loving what was going on then and picking it up for what they want to wear now.I agree about the element of whimsy! I think the trends in Josie and now, with all the bright colors, are quite joyous.I think you’re so right. There’s such a sense of joy and whimsy. So much of TikTok is people dancing and people doing things that are comedic. The costumes and acting things out, there’s just such an element of fun that’s associated with it. I think that’s why so many people are so attracted to TikTok, because it just is good for a giggle or you can wear that crazy outfit. It’s pure entertainment and you can get involved, too.Do you think the vaccine rollout and starting to come out of the pandemic this summer has helped influence these trends again?People want to enjoy themselves, so people are pushing a little bit further than they had previously. There was a little bit more seriousness to the way we were all dressing. Now we have a little bit more of a sense that everything is OK, don’t sweat the small stuff, and live for this moment. So, if that’s a color, or a crazy pattern combination, or wearing something that you wouldn’t normally but it makes you happy, there’s a lot of that coming into play. We’ve all been living at home for such a long time, and we’ve not ever experienced that before. So, we’re revisiting our clothes in a way that we hadn’t previously. We go into our closets and we’re like, ‘Oh, my old friend! That beautiful dress, or that great suit, or those pants! He posted his first video in November, and he now has more than 900,000 followers, many of them young people who thank him for capturing their experiences so precisely. His unlikely path to online stardom: irreverent critiques of evangelical Christianity aimed at others who have left the faith. “If you just want to roll your eyes at how weird it all was, that’s what I’m here for,” Piper said, using a vulgarity, in a clip that has been viewed more than 800,000 times since he posted it to the video-sharing site in February. Piper is certainly not the only one to use social media to talk about religion. But for millions of current and former evangelicals, there is an extra layer of meaning in his recent emergence as a critic: The household he grew up in was headed by one of the most prominent figures in American evangelicalism. Abraham’s father, John Piper, is a best-selling author and theologian who regularly appears on lists of the most influential pastors in America; he retired as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis in 2013 after 33 years. Sign up for The Morning newsletter from the New York Times Fame tends to develop faster online than in the pulpit. Within less than five months, Abraham Piper’s follower count on TikTok has almost caught up with his father’s 1 million on Twitter. His posts — more than 300 videos to date — tackle the idea of a literal Hell (“How are you going to take your family to Outback after church while millions of people are burning alive?”), the evangelical conception of God (“unequivocal thumbs down”) and the absurdity of youth group missions trips (“a white savior’s evangelical vacation that other people pay for”). He delivers his monologues in a cheerful version of the didactic tone that thrives on TikTok. And his posts are visually appealing, too, as far as mini-lectures go. He often records while strolling through a formerly industrial area of Minneapolis, his long gray hair peeking out of a series of goofy knit hats. His other interests on TikTok include popular philosophy, language and the jigsaw puzzle company he co-founded. (Piper also co-founded and is on the board of a media company called Brainjolt; he told CNBC in 2017 that the company expected to take in $30 million that year.) On a snowy day in February, Piper took 59 seconds to explain to his followers why it is absurd for Christians to make their children read the Bible. “While other kids are learning to read with comics or whatever normal parents have around the house, here fundie kids are — 6, 7, 8 years old — devouring stories of Jezebel being defenestrated and then eaten by dogs,” he said with a bemused smile, using a slang term for “fundamentalist.” The Bible is “basically ‘Game of Thrones,’” he added, “except if you don’t read it, you go to Hell.” Tyler Huckabee, a senior editor at the Christian magazine Relevant, described TikTok as a forum well-suited to following a faith journey like Piper’s. “He’s borrowed a lot of tricks from his dad, in taking complicated ideas and packaging them in quotable, easy-to-understand sound bites,” he said. Unlike the one-time weightiness of a book or the one-dimensionality of text-based Twitter, Huckabee explained, TikTok can offer “an ongoing window into his thought process, and his evolution as a person.” He is also tapping into the growing appetite online for accounts of rejecting one’s evangelical upbringing. If the New Atheist movement of the early 2000s devoted itself to intellectual combat with the claims of Christianity, the more recent “exvangelical” movement elevates personal stories of people who have walked away. Melissa Stewart, another popular “exvangelical” personality on TikTok, grew up in an Independent Fundamental Baptist church in Minnesota. When she married at 18, her pastor used John Piper’s work in premarital counseling sessions. She also participated in a church group that studied his best-known book, “Desiring God,” which argues that joy is an essential piece of the Christian life. Stewart is now divorced and in law school. On TikTok, where she has about 179,000 followers, she posts about feminism, sexuality and atheism. “To see someone who didn’t just come from that world but came from that family, who has clearly done the work to get out, and is so introspective and gentle and grounded” gives a lot of people hope, she said in an interview. “If John Piper’s son can deconstruct and get to this place, I can do this, too.” For others, Piper’s pedigree is proof that ex-Christians should not be dismissed as people who were never really committed in the first place. “One of the common refrains is that these people were never Christian,” said Blake Chastain, who popularized the term “exvangelical” when he named his podcast in 2016. “But the people who leave over these issues are the people who took it seriously. They were the youth group kids who were on fire for God.” Piper is one of a number of children of prominent conservative Christians who have publicly rejected elements of their parents’ teaching. Jay Bakker, the son of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, is an advocate for LGBTQ acceptance in the church. The five children of the combative evangelist Rick Joyner recently told New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof that they vote Democratic. Abraham Piper was excommunicated from his father’s church at age 19 after rejecting the faith. “At first I pretended that my reasoning was high-minded and philosophical,” he later wrote in a Christian magazine. “But really I just wanted to drink gallons of cheap sangria and sleep around.” Four years later, he returned to the faith, and was welcomed back at the church in what his father has described as a “beautiful restoration service.” At some point after that, Piper departed again — this time, apparently, for good. In his videos, however, Piper talks only vaguely about growing up in and rejecting what he describes as fundamentalism. He never mentions his lineage, and he declined to participate in this article. John Piper, too, declined to comment. In his videos, Abraham Piper repeatedly insists he is not trying to convince anyone of anything. “Do you know how boring and soul-sucking it is to base your whole life on making sure other people change to become more like you?” he asked his followers in February. It’s not that nothing matters, he added. “But you get to pick what. You decide what matters.
