  • It's understood the CRL Rights Commission will probe the murder of a mentally ill woman who died after a mob attack in Soweto.
  • Jostina Sangweni, 59, was beaten and died in hospital.
  • Her daughter said she was diagnosed with schizophrenia last month.

An independent body has stepped in to investigate the circumstances of the murder of a mentally ill woman in Soweto.

Jostina Sangweni, 59, was attacked last week after she was accused of witchcraft. She was in a critical condition when she was found after the attack and was taken to hospital, where she died.

Now the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) will probe the matter, according to eNCA.

CRL Rights Commission chairperson Professor Luka David Mosoma told eNCA that Sangweni "died for no apparent reason".

He said:

I want to plead with all South Africans, we have many men and women who could be walking like Mama Jostina Sangweni. Please, don't kill them. They are suffering and they need help. Yours is to lend your help at this time when they need it.

Police have appealed for help finding the perpetrators, News24 previously reported.

"Police are … appealing to the community for assistance with information that could lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators of this violent crime against a woman who was allegedly accused of witchcraft when, in fact, preliminary evidence reveals that the deceased was mentally unwell," Peters said.

Her daughter, Elizabeth Nkosi, reportedly told SAfm that she was diagnosed with schizophrenia in March and spent some time with a spiritual healer in the hope it would complement her medical treatment.
