When actors show politicians on screen

India is a country where politicians are considered a bigger figure than life and enjoy great popularity among the masses. And when actors play the roles of politicians on the silver screen, the hype surrounding such films is widely watched.

As people watch the lives of their heroes unravel on the big screen, it becomes an emotional clock that reflects on the phases of Indian politics. Here is a list of some of the most discussed political movies of recent times:

Thalaivi

An upcoming multilingual biographical film about the life of the late Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa. Kangana Ranaut plays the role of the former AIADMK supremo. Directed by AL Vijay and released on April 23, it has been postponed due to an increase in Covid incidents.

NTR: Mahanayakudu

Telugu biographical film based on the life of the legendary NT Rama Rao. Helmet by Krish, the film has an ensemble cast, with Nandamuri Balakrishna playing the role of NTR. The film was the debut of Vidya Balan in Telugu films. The rest of the cast includes popular actors like Rana Daggubati and Nandamuri Kalyan Ram. MM Keeravani composed the music for the film. It is available on Amazon Prime.

Yatra

This biographical film in Telugu is based on the life of former Andhra Pradesh Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Mollywood superstar Mammootty has landed the role of YSR in the Mahi V Raghav director. The film, which was released in February 2019, received praise and Mammootty’s performance, as the legendary politician is much appreciated. The film can be watched on the OTT platform Amazon Prime.

Thackeray

The biopic revolves around the life of late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Nawazuddin Siddiqui delivers another classic performance as the charismatic ‘Shiv Sena supremo’ on the silver screen. Directed by Abhijit Panse, it was released on January 25, 2019 on the occasion of the 93rd birthday celebration of the generous leader. It is currently available on Netflix.

The casual prime minister

Vijay Ratnakar Gutte director shows the life of former Indian Prime Minister and renowned economist Manmohan Singh. With veteran actor Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh, the film is based on the eponymous memoirs of Sanjaya Baru. Baru was between (2004-08) Singh’s media adviser and chief spokesperson. Akshaye Khanna plays the role of Sanjaya Baru in the film that opened for mixed reviews after the release. The film can be watched on ZEE5.

More cheerful

The list does not stop here. An insignificant man, a socio-political documentary based on the rise of Aam Admi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal, and also Baghini: Bengali tigress inspired by the life of West Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee, are other movies to watch as the election fever hits the country!
