Karimnagar: Jyothirao Phule’s 195th birthday was celebrated on a large scale in the former Karimnagar district on Sunday. Public representatives including MLAs, MLCs, political leaders, government officials and others paid tribute to the social reformer by decorating Phule’s statues and portraits throughout the district.
MLC Naradasu Laxman Rao, along with district collector K Shashanka and the commissioner of the municipal corporation Karimnagar, decorated the Phule statue at the bypass of the city.
Laxman Rao said at the event that Phule was a social reformer and philosopher who fought against caste discrimination, which had been widely applied in the past. Continuing the Phule pursuit, the Telangana government instituted several schemes for the welfare of BC and other trampled divisions. An amount of 45,000 million has also been allocated for the well-being of BCs in the state.
Shashanka, who describes the Phule as a social reformer and philosopher, said Phule fought against caste and gender discrimination and campaigned for the abolition of the empowerment of Dalits and women.
He said Phule had organized many programs and campaigned against the repression of Dalits. The Telangana government has implemented schemes in the name of Phule. Promoting Phule’s intentions is a real tribute to him, he said.
While Choppadandi MLA Sunke Ravishankar participated in celebrations at Arnakonda in Choppadandi Mandal, Peddapalli MLA Dasari Manohar Reddy decorated the state of Phule in Peddapalli.
Collectors D Krishana Bhaskar (Rajanna-Sircilla), Dr Sangeeta Satyanarayana (Peddapalli) and G Ravi (Jagitial) also took part in the Phule Jayanthi celebrations in their respective districts.
