India, on Sunday reported 1,52,879 fresh cases of coronavirus infections, setting another record for the biggest one-day spike ever and taking the Covid tally of the country to 1.33 crore. 839 deaths in the last 24 hours pushed the total death count to 1.69 lakh.
This is the fifth consecutive day that India has recorded more than 1 lakh cases of coronavirus infections. The number of fresh cases reported yesterday was 1,45,384, five percent less than today.
According to the health ministry, the active caseload in India has increased to 11,08,087 comprising 8.29 percent of the total infections, while the recovery rate further dropped to 90.44 percent. The active cases were at their lowest at 1,35,926 on February 12 and at its highest at 10,17,754 on September 18, 2020.
The Delhi government on Saturday announced a new restriction, banning most public gatherings and setting limits for attendance at restaurants, theatres, on public transport, and functions like weddings and funerals. Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh has imposed restrictions on gatherings of five or more people at religious people in view of Navratri and Ramzan festivals.
India began its vaccination drive on January 16 with health workers and frontline workers getting inoculated in the first phase of the rollout. The second phase of the vaccination commenced on March 1 for those who are above 60 years of age and for people aged 45 and above with specified comorbid conditions. The vaccination drive extended to include everybody aged 45 from April 1.
