As you probably know dreams occur during the Paradoxical (rapid eye movement stage of sleep) so called due to brain waves being similar to that of an awake state whilst being asleep.
What's interesting is that the visual processing centre and limbic system (responsible for emotions) display higher levels of activity while the pre frontal cortex (responsible for logic and reasoning) is inhibited.
This explains the nature of dreams where they are often irrational, emotionally charged and nonsensical yet we do not try to make sense or rationalise whilst in the dream.
One further interesting point is that nightmares do not occur during this stage and actually occur in stages 3-4 of Non rapid eye movement sleep.

Interesting. I’m terrible at expressing my emotions/knowing what emotions I am feeling so my dreams and nightmares usually play out my fears etc in physical form so I can process them. It’s very very strange. My dreams are basically as real as real life as well. Soooooo vivid. I learn a lot about myself and my subconscious based on observing my own dreams.
