EC asks parties to strictly observe Covid guidelines

With Covid cases surging in many states, the Election Commission has issued a letter to all parties asking their star campaigners political leaders and candidates to observe COVID-19 protocols. This is what the letter sent yesterday says.

  • Norms of social distancing, wearing of masks have been flouted in disregard to the commission's guidelines
  • Political parties and candidates are exposing themselves as well as the public to the danger of infection
  • In cases of breach, won't hesitate in banning public meetings of star campaigners or political leaders without further reference

The notice was issued with 5 out of 8 phases in Bengal still remaining. Polls are already over in Tamil Nadu. Kerala - where cases have been surging even earlier - and Assam.

Domjur & Chunchura: Where TMC have a point to prove

Domjur assembly constituency in Howrah district is witnessing a tough fight between turncoat Trinamool Congress heavyweight Rajib Banerjee, who is now the BJP candidate, and TMC’s Kalyanendu Ghosh.
Banerjee, a former minister, is facing an acid test in the constituency he won twice before, in 2011 and 2016, on a TMC ticket. He joined the BJP in January. He has considerable clout, while his TMC opponent is a dedicated grassroot-level worker.

Chunchura, in neighbouring Hooghly district, is a major headache for chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Lack of industrialisation, closed jute mills and unemployment are major poll issues. BJP has fielded sitting Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee from there. TMC has fielded Asit Majumdar as its candidate
