    View: Why I am an Indian - not India - cricket fan

    Synopsis

    My transformation along similar lines began some years ago. It started, from the first years of this century, when the notion of cricket fandom became entwined with the idea of an aggressive national identity. When fandom seemed to be no longer good enough and was supplanted by jingoism on the rocks. I noticed it in stadia and in front of TV screens across India.

    In his book, The Commonwealth of Cricket, Ramachandra Guha writes about how it is more important to him, when India are playing, to watch a good game rather than for India to win at any cost. ‘When I was young, I desperately wanted India to win; every match, against every opponent… Now, I still wanted India to win, but what I wanted even more was a good match. I became disgusted by the cricketing jingoism around me…’ My transformation along
