Lucknow, Apr 10(UNI) Uttar Pradesh reported 12,787 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Saturday as the second wave of the pandemic is surging with more than a thousand doctors and medical staff being reported infected across the state.
The state also reported 48 COVID related deaths in the past 24 hours as confirmed by the state additional chief secretary health Amit Mohan Prasad here on Saturday .
With the new additions the number of active cases in the state has gone up to 58,801. In the last 24 hours 2207 people have been discharged from hospitals from across the state after they made a complete recovery from the virus.
The capital Lucknow continues to be the hotspot with 4,059 new cases reported in the past 24 hours along with 23 deaths. There are now a total of 16,990 active cases in Lucknow and reports said that there is an acute shortage of hospital beds for corona patients.
Lucknow, was followed by Prayagraj which reported 1,460 new cases and two deaths. There are now 6,902 active cases in the city.
Varanasi reported 983 new cases and Kanpur 706. Kanpur also reported six COVID deaths.
Around 2.12 lakh people have undergone testing for corona in the past 24 hours. This is the highest ever number of corona test being conducted in a day in the state so far.
Fresh cases were also reported from Gorakhpur 422, Meerut 236, Jhansi 235, Gautam Buddha Nagar 221, Ballia 188, Jaunpur 186, Muzaffarnagar 161, Ghaziabad 159, Bareilly 144, Ghazipur 140, Barabanki 139, Rae Bareli 127, Mathura 127, Basti 117, Sultanpur 106 and Mirzapur 101.
Officials here admitted that the situation is deteriorating day by day due to the large number of new cases being reported in every district of the state. The government has imposed a night curfew in ten cities to control the spread of the virus.
According to reports the second wave of corona virus infection in the state is spreading so fast that in just ten days of April, it has increased by 80 percent.
Currently, there are a total of 58,801 active cases in the state, out of which 38,458 cases were added in the first two weeks of April alone. Earlier, by March 31, some 9,848 newly cases had been reported.
The recovery rate has come down to 91 percent in April, from 98.5 per cent in the first week of March. The maximum number of active cases reported at one time in the state was 68,235 on September 17, 2020.
