Tamil Nadu logs 5,441 new cases; hotspot Chennai 1,752

The state’s case tally touched 9,20,827 and the cumulative death toll reached 12,863.
The state government has said it will impose night curfew and additional restrictions if there is no reduction in cases. On Friday, TN added 5,441 cases and 23 deaths to its Covid-19 registry. After 1,890 patients were discharged, there were 33,659 active cases.
The state’s case tally touched 9,20,827 and the cumulative death toll reached 12,863. While hotspot Chennai registered 1,752 new cases and 10 deaths, thirteen other districts reported more than 100 cases each. The 12,861 active cases in Chennai kept doctors and hospitals busy.
While many hospitals were full and were turning away patients, administrators said it was a struggle to replenish stocks of life saving drugs such as antiviral remdesiver. At the SIMS hospitals and MGM Hospitals stocks were replenished after several days of orders on Thursday and Friday, administrators said. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation managing director P Umanath confirmed that all government hospitals have adequate stock of all lifesaving drugs for Covid-19.
Many patients from Tiruvallur, which has 1,083 active cases and Chengalpet (1,332) are also travelling to Chennai for treatment. After Chennai, Coimbatore (3389) had the highest number of active cases. On Friday, active cases in Trichy were 1,083.
After Chennai, the highest number of cases were reported from Coimbatore (473), Chengalpet (465), Trichy (213), Tiruvallur (195) and Kancheepuram (153). While Cuddalore (148), Tiruppur (148), Thanjavur (144), Madurai (142), Salem(126), Nagapattinam(124), Tirunelveli(114) and Vellore(109) crossed the 100 mark, Krishnagiri and Ranipet had 96 and 95 new cases respectively.
Ten districts other than Chennai reported deaths. While Tiruvallur, Thanjavur and Trichy reported two each, Chengalpet, Coimbatore, Kamcheepuram, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar reported one death each.
Meanwhile, 1,18,271 people took the Covid vaccine on Friday. The last time the number of vaccinations in the state went beyond one lakh in a day was on March 29. So far, 36lakh (3605307) doses of the vaccine has been administered in Tamil Nadu.
