One of the biggest aspects of any Asus ROG Phone launch is the long list of peripherals that accompany it and the ROG Phone 5 is no exception. With the launch of ROG Phone 5, owing to some of the updates to the phone's design both inside and outside, the accessories are seeing some changes. Here’s what you need to know before the Asus ROG Phone 5 goes on sale on Flipkart next week.
New Asus ROG Phone 5 Accessories
There are three new accessories hitting stores alongside the Asus ROG Phone 5.
AeroActive Cooler 5
The AeroActive Cooler 5 features and updated design from its earlier counterparts. Owing to the ROG Phone 5's new internal design, the AeroActive Cooler 5's fan now sits directly on top of the CPU. According to Asus, this allows the cooler to deliver up to a 10 degree celcius drop in CPU temperature without any external power. The cooler also adds two physical AirTrigger buttons, a kickstand, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Asus ROG Kunai 3 Gamepad
The ROG Kunai 3 Gamepad has been updated from its earlier iterations to better support the ROG Phone 5. The Kunai 3 features three configurations: handheld mode, all-in-one mode, and mobility mode. The controller offers 4 shoulder buttons, 2 rear control keys, 2 clickable analogue sticks, a d-pad, and 4 face buttons with LEDs. The ROG Kunai 3's design is quite similar to Nintendo's Switch JoyCons.
Asus ROG Lighting Armor Case
The ROG Phone 5 Lighting Armor Case, custom made by Asus, is a case for the smartphone that supports the built-in Auro lighting capabilities of the ROG Phone 5. The smartphone automatically detects when the case is used through a pogo-pin connection, allowing owners to apply a theme to the case that matches the phone's own wallpapers, icons and sounds. Asus has warned, however, that the case will cover the ROG Vision display present on the backs of the ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate variants.
Asus ROG Phone 5 Accessories Compatibility List
While Asus ROG Phone 5 uses a lot of the same technologies as its older releases, there are quite a few of the older accessories that will not work with the ROG Phone 5. Here's a full list of incompatible peripherals:
- AeroActive Cooler 3
- TwinView Dock 3
- Mobile Desktop Dock
The AeroActive Cooler 3 not working with the smartphone isn't too surprising, since the ROG Phone 5's internals sport a new design placing the CPU in the centre of the device rather than on a side. The new internal design has been taken into consideration with the design of the new AeroActive Cooler 5.
Asus has stated that the lack of compatibility with TwinView Dock 3 and Mobile Desktop Dock is largely because the company hasn't seen much of an audience for the peripherals. The company mentioned that sales of the TwinView Dock 3 and the Mobile Desktop Dock were low enough that it wasn't feasible to continue making and supporting peripherals that small minority was using what with less than 50 units sold in close to three years.
