KANPUR: Thirty
inmates of
Etawah district jail have tested positive for Covid-19 and are being provided medical assistance inside the jail itself.
“Thirty inmates have tested positive for Covid-19 at
Etawah jail. The infected prisoners are being treated in separate barracks in the jail itself due to shortage of police force owing to the ongoing panchayat poll nominations. A team of doctors is constantly monitoring the inmates,” said chief medical officer Etawah Dr NS Tomar on Thursday.
Currently, around 1,700 prisoners are lodged at the
district jail which has a capacity of just 700 inmates, stated the district jail sources. The danger of an outbreak has increased as inmates are lodged at the jail beyond its capacity, added a senior district health officer further. Amid Covid-19 surge, the UP government had recently announced to launch a special drive for administering the vaccines on priority to jail inmates.
