It is believed that after Do Anjaane’s release in 1976, Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s onscreen chemistry was much-loved by the junta. After a while, their romance allegedly blossomed in real life as well. Amitabh was already married to Jaya Bachchan in 1973. At this point, their affair was still a secret. It came into the limelight during the shoot of Ganga Ki Saugandh in 1978 when Big B reportedly lost his temper on a co-actor who was misbehaving with Rekha. In a past interview with People magazine Jaya spoke about the alleged affair. When asked about how she kept the marriage going, she had said, “By just leaving him alone. You have to have the conviction.” She had said that she married a good man and a family that believes in commitment. She also said that one must not get too possessive, especially in a profession in which you know things aren't going to be easy. “You can either drive the artist crazy, or you can help him or her grow. And if he goes, then he was never yours,” Jaya had said. When asked if rumours about Amitabh Bachchan’s affairs disturbed her, she had said, “You are a human being, you do react. If you react to negativity, you also react to positivity. You are reassured every second by gestures, by looks, by happenings, and that keeps you going.” She had stated that a human being at a very vulnerable age and time gets carried away.
She went on to say that the media tried linking Amitabh with every one of his heroines. “My life would have been hell if I had taken it all seriously. We are made of sterner stuff,” Jaya had said on a concluding note.
