COIMBATORE: Tirupur MP K Subbarayan on Friday sought the immediate intervention of the central government to control the rising price of yarn as many textile units are on the verge of shutting down.
Speaking to reporters in Tirupur, the MP said the textile units, which were badly affected during the lockdown, have just recovered. β€œAt a time when they are returning to normalcy, the abnormal price rise of yarn has been affecting them at large,” he said.
The MP said he wrote to Union textile minister Smriti Irani in March in this regard. Subbarayan said he had not received any reply from the minister nor from her ministry. He said he was ready to meet the minister in person to discuss the issue.
Stating that seven mills of the National Textile Corporation (NTC) are functioning partially after the lockdown, he said that the government should take steps to supply yarn to the industrialists in the state through the mills and it would not just be profitable to the industries but also the corporation itself.
"By doing so, the textile units could get yarn at a reasonable price without any interruption in the supply, and the corporation would be able to provide work to all its employees apart from making profit in the business,” he added.
He also requested the Tamil Nadu government to encourage cotton cultivation in the state to meet the rising requirement because industries have been purchasing cotton from other states
He criticised governor Banwarilal Purohit for appointing vice-chancellors of Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) and Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas) in a hurried manner. He questioned the necessity of appointing the VCs immediately after the assembly election, without waiting till the new government is formed.
