MacBook, iPad production slows due to global chip shortage

San Francisco: Apple has delayed production of some MacBook and iPad models due to the worldwide shortage of chips.

According to Nikkei Asia, shortages of chips have caused delays in a major step in the manufacture of the MacBook around mounting components on printed circuits prior to final assembly.

The report, citing industry sources and experts, said the delays were a sign that the shortage of chips was growing and that it could affect smaller tech players even more.

Some iPad assemblies have meanwhile been postponed due to a lack of exhibits and display components, the report said.

Production plans for Apple’s iconic iPhones have so far not been affected by the shortage of stock, although the supply of some components for the devices is ‘quite strict’.

Apple’s rival Samsung Electronics recently confirmed that the shortage of chips for the company could be problematic in the April to June period, adding that there are teams of employees who have to work 24 hours a day to solve the problem.

Apple sells about 200 million iPhones, more than 20 million MacBooks, 19 million iPads and more than 70 million pairs of AirPods a year – all in the top five worldwide in their respective consumer electronics segments – making the company one of the world’s most powerful forces of acquisition.
