Fiona Cairns, who led the team who created Prince William and Kate Middleton's massive wedding cake in 2011, appeared on ITV's new documentary The Day Will and Kate Got Married and shared a rather awkward run-in with the queen.

The eight-tiered fruit cake was about a meter tall and adorned with 900 leaf and floral touches and topped with the couple's cypher.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's royal wedding cake is photographed before it goes on display at Buckingham Palace during the annual summer opening on 20 July 2011 in London, England.

Fiona recalls putting the finishing touches on the cake in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace, but a door had to be removed in order for the cake to fit through. The queen walked in on them and made a brief appearance – so too did her wicked wit.

"I can remember her saying, 'I hear that you've been dismantling my house,'" Fiona says in the documentary. "And I said to her, 'Well, we had to take a door down from the room below for the trolley to go through with the cake.' But it was all put back so in the end, it was fine."

Though William and Kate will celebrate their 10th anniversary on 29 April, pieces of the fruitcake were still being served as recent at 2018, according to People, at Prince Louis' christening.
