India and China hold 11th round of military talks in eastern Ladakh

New Delhi: India and China on Friday held another round of military talks to continue the decoupling process in the remaining friction points such as Hot Springs, Gogra and Depsang in eastern Ladakh, people familiar with the development said.

The eleventh round of the Corps Commandant Level talks began around 10:30 a.m. at the Chushul border point on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, they said.

The 10th round of the military dialogue took place on February 20, two days after both military troops and weapons withdrew from the North and South shores of Lake Pangong. The talks lasted about 16 hours.

The Indian delegation at Friday’s talks is led by Lieutenant General PGK Menon, the commander of the Leh-based 14th Corps.

One of the people quoted above said India will insist on completing the decoupling process at the earliest friction points.

Late last month, General MM Naravane, army chief, said that the threat to India only ‘decreased’ after the non-involvement in Lake Pangong, but it did not completely disappear.

The border strike between the Indian and Chinese military forces last erupted on May 5 after a violent clash in Lake Pangong and both sides gradually improved their deployment by chasing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weapons.

Following a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two parties completed the withdrawal of troops and weapons on the north and south shores of Lake Pangong in February, in accordance with a non-engagement agreement.

India has insisted that resolving the outstanding issues, including in Depsang, Hot Springs and Gogra, is essential for the overall ties between the two countries.
