Security Video Captures Moment of Yenkin-Majestic Paint Explosion in Columbus, Ohio

One person has died and eight others are injured after an explosion at a paint manufacturing facility in Columbus, Ohio, early Thursday morning.

The Columbus Fire Department said it received a call about an explosion at Yenkin-Majestic Paints at 12:05 a.m. Because of the fire's large size, over 100 firefighters were called to the scene to assist in battling the flames. Local ABC affiliate WSYX showed security camera footage that captured the massive explosion.

When they arrived, firefighters were met with employees evacuating the plant. Those who were injured were taken to a local hospital. While fire suppression operations began, two victims trapped in the building were rescued. They were transported to the Ohio State University hospital in critical condition, the Fire Department told Newsweek in a statement.

Officials said that residential evacuations were not necessary and that surrounding businesses were not open at the time of the explosion.

While accounting for employees, the Fire Department determined that one person was missing. Officials said they later identified him as Wendell Light, a 44-year-old press room supervisor for Yenkin-Majestic. He was found dead under building rubble at around 9:16 a.m.

The eight victims who were taken to the hospital are now in stable condition, officials said.

WSYX reported that hazmat teams were on the scene to help because of the materials used in the building. According to the TV station, Yenkin-Majestic is a process safety management site that follows Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards for highly hazardous chemicals. An OSHA compliance official was reported to be on the scene early Thursday morning.

According to records on OSHA's website, Yenkin-Majestic had five previous cases, from 2011 to 2015. In 2012, a report cited 26 violations related to hazardous materials after a "cloud containing flammable vapors" was released from the facility in Columbus, according to OSHA.

"A serious violation occurs when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known," according to OSHA.

There is no word yet on what sparked the explosion, which is under investigation.
