Telangana punishes Rs 853 million to strengthen Hyderabad’s flood control system

Hyderabad: To prevent a recurrence of the chaos caused by Hyderabad after unprecedented heavy rainfall in October last year, the Telangana government has drawn up a comprehensive plan to strengthen the existing drainage system in the city.

The plan, which includes the reform of drainage pipes and the construction of redundant boots, received the government’s administrative approval for R853 million. It covers the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and surrounding municipal bodies.

The move, which takes place in the wake of the October 2020 flood, aims to prevent flooding of low-lying areas and mitigate the damage suffered by heavy rains. The state government has issued orders ordering officials to carry out the works and ensure that flooding of low-lying areas does not occur again.

The state government has drawn up the Strategic Nala Development Program (SNDP) to plan, develop and maintain a dedicated stormwater drainage and ‘nala’ (drainage) infrastructure in Hyderabad.

To accelerate the pace of work, the project has been divided into 15 different packages, and the tenders will be driven soon, officials said.

The heavy rains that plagued Hyderabad for more than a week last year led to massive flooding of several low-lying areas, causing countless 40,000 families scattered across the city.
